Fall seven times, stand up eight.

Introduction

Growing up, I had a skewed view of reality, shaped largely by TV. Life seemed to effortlessly "happen" to others—they went on vacations, got married, started businesses, and lived happily ever after. For a long time, I believed that life would just happen to me too. But by the time I reached my twenties, I faced a harsh truth: nothing was happening, and I wasn’t happy about it.

As this realization set in, I understood that if I wanted more—whether it was improving my health, advancing my education, or securing my finances—I had to make it happen. I started seeking out others who shared this drive for self-improvement, surrounding myself with people with similar ambition.

One moment stands out vividly from that time. I was in the middle of a particularly grueling workout, down on my hands and knees, with my coach and the rest of the group waiting on me. I looked up at him and he simply said, "Greatness is down here." That moment was defining—knowing someone saw me giving my all and believed I had more to give.

Forging your path to success will be filled with people telling you it’s okay to give up and who won’t recognize your achievements as they come along. As you walk away into your own sunset, they’ll still be behind you, spreading negativity. But you’re not here for them. You’re here for grit and determination. You’re here for bulletproof motivation.

Acknowledge the Situation

Do you know what the last stage of grief is? It's acceptance. You might find yourself shutting down, avoiding reminders, and procrastinating. This is the bottom of the barrel—the feeling of being stuck, with no clear way out. It's like knowing your bank account is nearly empty and dreading that moment at the checkout, hoping your card doesn’t get declined because you’re too discouraged to check your balance.

This is where many of us end up when motivation slips away. If you want to escape this limbo, the first step is taking accountability. Let it sink in—nobody is coming to save you. Have your survival instincts kicked in yet? Good. Let’s talk about taking action.

Chart Your Path

Motivation without direction is useless. It’s like getting hyped up for a game that isn’t happening. Define exactly what you want, how you’ll measure your progress, and set a timeline that keeps you accountable. With a clear roadmap, you’re more likely to stay excited about the real progress you’re making toward that light at the end of the tunnel.

Once your goals are locked in, it’s time for a recon mission. Come up with a short list of things to do in the next few days to get the ball rolling. Is there someone you can talk to for advice? What resources are available online or locally?

Remember, you’re not looking to be saved. You’re not seeking a handout. You’re approaching life with a different attitude—one focused on becoming better and making things happen. You’re looking for the tools and resources to help you build the success you want.

Seize the Day

You’ve acknowledged your problems, outlined a plan, and gathered the intel you need. Now, it’s time to eliminate distractions and focus up.

I once watched an interview where a reporter asked Elon Musk if achieving so much required a degree of obsession. He paused, thought about it, and then nodded, saying, “Yeah, I think that’s true.” The interviewer may have intended to use the word “obsession” negatively, but it resonated with me and my relentless pursuit of happiness.

Being fully immersed in your academic goals may seem like an obsession to others, but consider how few are willing to endure the setbacks and challenges required to achieve greatness. An object in motion tends to stay in motion, and once you start making progress on your goals, the positive feedback loop kicks in. But this momentum doesn’t happen by accident—it’s built through grit and determination.

Conclusion

Greatness isn’t handed out—it’s earned. You’re going to run into roadblocks, and that’s okay. The key is to acknowledge your issues, motivate yourself, and keep pushing forward. You can achieve anything you set your mind to. Remember, the power to succeed is in your hands. If that means burning the midnight oil and overcoming a few hurdles, so be it. You want to be able to look back and say you put it all on the line.
