Introduction
NoteKnight is excited to announce the launch of image support for flashcards! Building on the momentum from our October release of the flashcard matching game, this update marks our next leap toward creating a comprehensive platform. But this wasn’t just adding images. Behind the scenes, we’ve made significant performance upgrades, redesigned experiences, and introduced new tools to make creating and studying better than ever.
Performance and Scalability
Before developing image support, we laid the groundwork by reimagining our cloud storage architecture and migrating to optimized server locations. To take it a step further, we integrated Amazon CloudFront, a cutting-edge content delivery network, guaranteeing images and flashcards load in milliseconds – no matter where you are in the world.
New Look and Feel
To accommodate images and enhance usability, we gave the flashcard creation page a visual and functional makeover. The new design is cleaner, faster, and more enjoyable to use.
- Editor – The toolbar is now centralized and shared between the front and back of each flashcard. This static placement reduces movement, improves visibility, and frees up space for future expansions.
- Undo/Redo Buttons – Conveniently step back or forward in your editing history with the click of a button. No more accidental mistakes slowing you down.
- Horizontal Swap – Easily swap the content or images between the front and back of a flashcard. Want to reverse the card? One click – done!
- Insert Cards Anywhere – You can now add new flashcards between existing ones, allowing for better control and organization.
- Flashcard Cap – We’ve reduced the max flashcard limit to 250 per set. Less than 1% of users hit the previous 300-card cap, with most being large language learning sets that are intended to be used with spaced repetition systems we do not support.
Image Integration
Adding images to your flashcards is simple. Just click on a thumbnail slot to upload an image. Each flashcard supports images on both the front and back, allowing for up to 200 images per set – that’s 100 flashcards with visuals on both sides.
- Supported Formats – JPG, PNG, WEBP, and GIF files are fully supported, with a max file size of 5MB. This ensures quick uploads and fast delivery.
- Optimization – Images are automatically compressed in the cloud. This keeps the creation process smooth and your study sessions fast.
- Image Viewing – Clicking on an image thumbnail provides a full size view in the center of the screen, making details easy to view.
Enhanced Study and Review Pages
We revisited the flashcard review page and study games to ensure seamless image integration into your study experience.
- Responsive Design – Whether you’re studying on a desktop, tablet, or mobile, images adapt to fit beautifully without overlapping or obscuring text.
- Matching Game – Unlike some competitors (we’re looking at you, Quizlet), we’ve opted for a vertical stacking design. This prevents text from being awkwardly overlaid on images, ensuring readability and a clean interface. Overflowing text continues to scroll, keeping content proportional and organized.
- Memorization Game – The memorize game now fully supports flashcards with images. Just like in the review page, images can be zoomed in for better visibility during gameplay.
- Minor Tweaks and Polish – We’ve made tons of small adjustments across image-supported pages, like hiding the navigation bar during games and showing scrollbars only on hover. These subtle changes add up and translate into a more visually appealing user experience.
Wrapping It Up
This update reflects our commitment to user experience. We’ve worked to avoid the frustrations found on other platforms, focusing instead on simplicity, usability, and performance.
We’re excited to roll this out and give users the chance to experience these improvements firsthand. Image support is free through early next year – so dive in and see how NoteKnight continues to evolve!
What’s Next?
Up next, we plan to revamp the dashboard and settings page. These areas haven’t changed much since launch, and with users managing hundreds of flashcard sets, we’re excited to introduce better management and organization tools.
Thank you for being part of the NoteKnight community – and stay tuned for more exciting updates!
